New York Adopts MAiD

13th state to adopt the U.S. model

New York has become the latest state to authorize medical aid in dying, giving terminally ill adults with a prognosis of six months or less the option to request medication they can self-administer to end their lives peacefully and on their own terms.

In her signing statement, Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is Roman Catholic, framed the law as an extension of New York’s long-standing commitment to bodily autonomy, saying that the measure will “allow New Yorkers to suffer less – to shorten not their lives, but their deaths.”

She described her decision as deeply personal, and noted in particular her experience watching her mother die of ALS
